  1. pulsar: A rapidly rotating neutron
  2. star with a strong magnetic field,
  3. which is not aligned with the axis of
  4. rotation. The poles of the magnetic
  5. field generate a beam of strong
  6. radiation emitted into space. Since
  7. the poles are not located at the axis of
  8. the starΓÇÖs rotation, the beam sweeps
  9. across the sky, much like a light in a
  10. lighthouse. Very young pulsars such
  11. as the one in the Crab Nebula rotate
  12. more than 100 times per second.
